Best practice: consider your words carefully

October 10, 2007

When discussing a job opportunity with an individual who would sell – well, everything – to work for you, please be advised to consider your tense.

Phrases such as “When you come in for orientation” or “Our relocation service will contact you and ship your belongings free of charge” and, my personal favorite, “You will be given a car” lead to false hope. If an offer is neither on the table nor iminent, please sprinkle your phrases liberally with words such as “IF.”

HR people are such mean dumb dumb heads.
